A 1999 graduate of Oakes College, Kenji Treanor earned his B.A. in American Studies with an emphasis in ethnic studies and socio-political analysis. Kenji has continued his social justice work through his professional as well as volunteer activities.
Stephanie Casher

Stephanie Casher graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1998 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Education. After graduation, she became a staff member on campus, and now with eleven years of service under her belt, currently works as a Committee Analyst in the Academic Senate. Stephanie nurtures her creative spirit and passion for the written word by moonlighting as a writer and freelance editor. In December 2009, Stephanie partnered with two fellow writers to start their own publishing company, The Pantheon Collective (TPC), LLC.
Marti Noxon

Marti Noxon graduated from Oakes College in 1987 with a B.A. in Theater Arts. Marti has written and executive produced for many critically acclaimed shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Still Life. She is readying her launch into the film arena with the release of Dreamworks/Disney’s I Am Number Four.
Dr. David Shuman

David graduated from Oakes College in 1989 with a degree in Biology. He went on to receive a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 1993. David returned to Santa Cruz after veterinary school. In 1999, he converted an abandoned house on Laurel Street into the Westside Animal Hospital. He has a thriving Veterinary practice and continues to be actively involved in numerous community organizations.

Shadin Awad receives the UCSC Alumni Association’s 2014-2015 College Service Award for Oakes College

As an amazing Oakes and campus leader, Shadin is dedicated to mentoring students, both informally and as a Neighborhood Assistant. She has also been an active member of Rainbow Theater, and helped to coordinate the Afrikan Black Coalition Conference on our campus. This was the first time Afrikan Black Coalition Conference was hosted on our campus in 10 years; Shadin’s leadership was essential in making this happen. While doing all of this, Shadin earned a 4.0 during the Spring 2014 quarter.
Oakes Student Maria Hanes Visits the White House

Hanes’s interest in the topic of sports related head injuries and her gel-helmet proposal earned her two visits to the White House this week as a part of the administration-sponsored science fair along with an opportunity to talk with President Obama.
Don Rothman

Don Rothman joined the Oakes College (then College Seven) faculty in 1973, hired to teach writing and coordinate the writing tutoring program. After 34 years of teaching, Don "retired". He dedicated his work to exploring the promise of writing to enhance democracy, especially in the area of non-violent persuasion. He has recently published a book that combines some of his writings as well as his other love, photography.
