Thank you for your interest in returning to the student leader positions at Oakes College. As you already know, our student leaders play a critical role in the community at Oakes College. As returning student leaders, you would be playing a critical role in the student leader team. As always, we are looking for student leaders who are positive role models and outstanding leaders. We are looking for team players who are comfortable with flexible scheduling and have a desire to build a healthy and diverse community.

Our team of student leaders are comprised of 18 NAs and 4 CAs. While we don't have a specific number of returners that we hire, our goal is to try and build the best team we can with a wide variety of perspectives and good team dynamics.

You will be evaluated based on the following main criteria:

  • Your returning student leader application.
  • Your mid-year evaluation of NA/CA performance.
  • Your portfolio content and visual presentation
  • Your interview, coinciding with your Leadership Portfolio Presentation
    • There will be a short set of structured interview questions as well as questions about your presentation. Questions about your presentations will be based on points that you address as well as follow-up questions we have about guiding topics.

Leadership Portfolio:

The Leadership Portfolio is an opportunity for NAs and CAs interested in returning for an additional year to demonstrate their leadership abilities and showcase their contributions to the Oakes College community in a presentable format. The Portfolio can be as creative or straightforward as desired (e.g., webpage, PowerPoint, binder, or other creative format). The presentation is an opportunity to explain the portfolio.

Given what you have learned in your student leadership position at Oakes, you should address the following topics in your portfolio:

  1. Your role and impact as a peer educator.
  2. Your facilitation and public speaking skills (excluding block/building meetings).
  3. How you have developed and strengthened your communication skills.
  4. Your experience mentoring students.
  5. How you have educated students about social justice issues.
  6. Problem solving with your Co-NA or Co-CA, or the team as a whole.
  7. Time management skills that you have used or currently use to balance your position, academics, and extra-curricular activities.
  8. An ethical dilemma you have faced as an NA or CA, how you dealt with it, and what you learned from it.
As a general recommendation, the presentation of your leadership portfolio should last for about 15-20 minutes.  This will allow for 10-15 minutes of follow-up questions and 15 minutes of structured interview questions. As the presenter, you will need to plan out your time carefully as there will be no extra time available in the schedule.
